Triclosan (also known as Microban), a chemical that is now in most soaps, hand sanitizing gels, lotions and even toys, cutting boards and toothpaste, has come under scrutiny lately. It appears that especially during pregnancy, Triclosan has a toxic impact.
This article here talks about the study connecting Triclosan exposure to brain damage during pregnancy:
This article here points out that widespread use of Triclosan has contaminated our environment, including our water, and might be driving antibiotic resistance:
Besides the troubling news on Triclosan, it seems most soaps contain a whole laundry list of toxins and irritants. I started to read the ingredients and was astonished as what they can pack into these products! Everything from petrolium material to artificial parfum to even food coloring and more can be found in your basic soap.
In fact, when I set out to buy a Triclosan-free soap, I originally reached for the Target store exclusive brand, Method. As I stood in line waiting to buy my healthy soap, it occurred to me that I should read the ingredients. Here is the list:
Ingredients from packaging: Aqua(water), sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamide DEA, cocamidopropyl betaine, glycerin, aloe barbadensis gel, tocopheryl acetate(vitamin E), citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, benzophenone-4, methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, parfum(fragrance), Red 33 (CI 17200), Red 4 (CI 14700)
But at least it didn't have Triclosan, eh? (Sarcastic tone there). You can investigate a product before buying it and learn about the available studies and toxicity rating for FREE by visiting this site: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ I highly recommend bookmarking!
At a loss for what to do, I turned to a friend, Darlene. She had previously handcrafted an adorable wool soaker for my DS (Dear Son) taking care to respect the environment and the health of the babies who wear these little soakers. She also makes soap.
